Ideas to Read and Pass Along

Kevin & Jackie Freiberg

What did your employees teach you this week?

Leaders listen to learn. They absolutely understand that they can’t know it all, do it all or be it all. That’s why they dig-in hard to get a constant flow of ideas from the true experts—those who are in the trenches closest to the action. Do your people have a VOICE? Do they genuinely feel heard? Do they know that their voices count?

Try this for the next six weeks. Every Friday morning identify two or three things that you’ve learned from the people you work with during the week. Maybe it’s a new way to do something faster, better, cheaper; a new idea for a product or service; a better way to conduct a meeting or pursue a project; or a deeper understanding about a customer or a supplier. You get the idea.

If you can’t come up with a list each week ask yourself whether or not you care enough to really listen and learn from the people around you. If the list comes easy, take satisfaction in the fact that you are a learner and your people have a voice. Then, every Friday afternoon celebrate your colleagues by sending them a two-or-three line e-mail telling them what you learned from them.
