4 Ideas for Growing Your Email Impact

Do emails overwhelm you at times? According to a recent survey we send/receive an average of 191 emails a day. So if we’re connected for 12 of our 24 hours that means we’re dealing with about 16 emails an hour, that’s 16 distractions in a 60 minute period. So you have on average about 4 minutes to respond to most emails.

How’s this working for you? Keep in mind, sometimes an email is the only impression people have of you.

We’re getting sloppy— typos, words and critical issues and attachments missing, font inconsistencies, and a growing (bad) habit of “reply all”. Sloppy in the spirit of just getting through it all.

Bottom line, business emails are losing their impact, here are 8 simple strategies for having the impact you want when you press SEND.

  1. Get to the point. Emails should be short and direct. Start with what you need up front… Always tell your recipient WHAT you need by WHEN.
  2. Be specific in your subject line, the content of the email should not be a scavenger hunt.
  3. Connect, in the chaos of life and the glorification of busy, people are losing touch, so if you can find a way to relate to their world, their life, it doesn’t have to be detailed, a simple note of interest can go a long way.
  4. Spelling! Run a spell check, people are forgiving in emails, constant misspelling is
    not okay
    it looks rushed & sloppy.
  5. Turn off autocorrect. If technology is making the “wrong” changes for you, no excuses, turn it off.
  6. Stop the “reply all” habit, reply alls are uninvited guests in an inbox.
  7. Change the subject line as the email trail advances, be sure the content of the email is consistent with the subject line, otherwise it can be confused with a dated issue.
  8. Bcc “yourself” on important emails, sometimes its helpful and insightful to see what the recipient sees. This idea alone might change your approach to rushing through emails.
