52% of us are frustrated. Why?

On “The Innovation Engine” podcast, we discuss how leaders can create a culture where everyone can have a say in a company’s innovation efforts, the importance of tying innovation to a business case when taking it up the ladder, and why it’s vital to give people feedback on their ideas for innovation.

Here are some highlights from this episode:

  • We discuss the merits of empowering all employees to become a part of the innovation process, as well as pitfalls and roadblocks to avoid when doing so.
  • Dr. Freiberg provides an example of how one cutting edge health care company in California came up with the idea of a drive-thru blood clinic as a result of listening to employees who were closest to the customer.
  • We talk about why Noah Weiss, VP of Product Management at Foursquare, measures his creative output both during the week and on weekends.
  • Dr. Freiberg draws from her experience of studying corporate culture in many organizations and reveals common innovation traits that are inherent to innovative companies.

Tough Questions

Competitiveness demands commitment to truth and willingness to confront brutal facts. Unfortunately, most of us have biased perceptions of how the world works and how companies perform. In the absence of candid feedback, it is convenient to assume that reality is similar to our preconceived ideas. But ignorance and denial can be costly.

That’s why gutsy leaders seek to uncover the truth by asking tough questions. Continue reading…

Does Your Job Control Your Life

What if your job didn’t control your life?

Brazilian CEO, Ricardo Semler practices a radical form of corporate democracy, one that most companies are NOT ready for. We wrote about Ricardo in our book GUTS! Companies that Blow the Doors off Business as Usual (pgs. 73-76 & 136-37).

We also wrote an article on his insane approach to life and work: Semco – Insanity that Works. And now more than 10 years later (October 2014) Ricardo rocked the Global TED Stage and inspires us to seek WISDOM by asking why three times. Why? Why? Why?

Chances are your company isn’t ready for radical democracy, but all of us should be willing to seek the wisdom Ricardo is advocating. It’s worth 22 minutes… it could redirect your life!

Branded Culture

Branding has to go deeper than a catchy tag line. At Southwest Airlines it does, their new tag line, “Without a Heart it is Just a Machine” is fun, but is it real? In our book NUTS! we highlighted countless strategies Southwest uses to put Heart in everything they do — strategies that bring a tag line to life.

SWA is the real deal and has been a branded culture for well over 40 years, here is a great example: How Southwest Changed My Life.

Does your company have a branded culture?

What are you doing to bring your branding statement to life?
