Are You Daydreaming Enough?

According to Tim Brown, CEO IDEO…Relaxed attention (AKA daydreaming) is a good thing. During relaxed attention a problem or challenge is taking up space in your brain, but it isn’t on the front burner, whether you are aware of it or not, you are noodle(ing) on it! Relaxed attention lies somewhere between meditation, where you completely clear your mind, and the laser-like focus you apply when tackling a tough math problem. Our brains can make cognitive leaps when we’re not completely obsessed with a challenge, which is why good ideas sometimes come to us when we’re in the shower or talking a walk or on a long drive. Brown, offers 3 simple and time-tested ideas to enhance your creative capacity through engaging in relaxed attention (daydreaming):

1. Walk away from the problem, literally. As the philosopher-poet Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.” Maybe it’s the increased blood flow from exercising or the emotional distance gained by walking away from a problem. Whatever it is, we know through personal experience, some of our most creative ideas happen during a run or an intense work out. Moving, running, and walking actually inspires creative ideas, it works.

2. Carry a notebook or use your smart phone to capture random ideas (even by your bedside). You never know when good ideas will come. Having something nearby to jot ideas down ensures they won’t be forgotten.

3. Turn your “snooze button” into a “muse button.” Use those few minutes of half-consciousness every morning to let your mind wander over problems you’ve been wrestling with during waking hours. With some practice, you’ll start discovering fresh insights before your first sip of coffee.

What do you do to inspire more creative ideas?

How to Create a BEST Place to Work…

Do you want to create a BEST place, where the BEST people can do their BEST work? If so, here’s the good news, you don’t have to deploy a long or costly survey to do so, and you don’t have to be a CEO. Creating a BEST place is as much the will of you as it is the will of the CEO.

Here are 6 things to focus on:
1. A clear mission: Think about what you do and how you add value, talk about it (a lot)!
2. Camaraderie: Reach out, meet more people (make friends).
3. Challenging and meaningful work: When we engage in challenging work that adds value we become more committed and fulfilled. Steve Jobs offered the ultimate challenge, “Our customers dream of a happier and better life. Don’t just move products. Enrich lives.” How can you enrich lives…?
4. Opportunity to advance: What are you doing to grow and advance? Where are you going in the next 2 years? Create a plan (be purposeful).
5. Promote leaders who live the business values: Bad bosses suck the life and energy out of their people. To the contrary, transparent, trustworthy and respected leaders create best places to work. How does your boss rate? Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need, making assumptions leads to problems.
6. Offer pay plus perks: To inspire a best place to work, people need competitive pay plus “high leverage perks.” We’re not advocating pig pong tables and pets. We know of a company that brings in a beer cart on Friday afternoon. The perk does a few things, it gives people a chance to engage and connect personally and professionally, people share projects, grow their professional network, expand friendships and unwind all at the same time. Why not, Initiate a walking club, a happy hour, a book club, a brown bag lunch program.

Bottom line, creating a BEST place to work is about being more people centered vs. policy centered. How does your organization rate on these 6 items, we invite you to share your BEST place practices?
