Get Unstuck – Be Creative!

Want to get unstuck? Want to think and act more creatively? Here are 3 ways to try:

1. Schedule 10% unstructured time to explore and experiment at work. Innovation leaders like Google, 3M, Intuit, Tata and others encourage employees to become intrapreneurs by experimenting with new ideas on company time. More than 50% of people surveyed pursued an “intrapreneurial idea” at work. If you put in 40 hours, give yourself the freedom to explore/experiement for 4 hours each week. Even if you don’t achieve the next game changer, what if you inspire a cost savings, a customer enhancement or a better way to host a meeting? Even little improvements matter!

2. Be patient, do not rush creativity…incubate ideas, ideas need time to develop. Too often we over engineer “possible” innovations by forcing aggressive but unrealistic deadlines. We need to step back, give our minds a chance to do their magic. Whether it is conscious or not. Stepping back to “incubate” or noodle on an idea is valuable & insightful (only 6% of “Aha or Eureka” moments happen at work during a brainstorming session). Most Aha’s happen while dreaming, walking, running, showering — rarely while sitting at a desk.

3. Share and reward “effort.” Too often innovations that don’t pan out are rendered failures and the effort and learning behind them are lost and forgotten as well. What if you create a “Dare 2 Try” program that highlights and captures the effort and lessons learned on the journey. The fact is 70% of organizational change efforts fail, but the lessons learned along the way may be valuable for future experiments and change initiatives. Tata Group created a Dare to Try award as a way of rewarding effort and intelligent failure.

How about issuing a 30 day creativity challenge for yourself and your team and deploy these
3 strategies, let us know if it works…
