Innovation is Still Messy!

In London at the 3GIF (3rd Global Innovation Forum) all agreed innovation is uncertain, chaotic and has a tendency to be very MESSY. We shared a few ways to navigate the challenges of innovation:

1. Begin by anticipating messy and train for it… Think like an athlete.

2. Solve a problem that matters. Innovation takes guts; the more radical the idea the more you will scare the daylights out those who are invested in yesterday’s innovation. Culture is designed to protect itself and the keepers of the status quo do not give in easily. What fuels the fires of perseverance when the critics are firing arrows and the demons of self-doubt set in? What gives you the courage to press on when you are in untested waters and its murky? A conviction that you are solving a problem that really matters. A chance to change the world!

3. Let Limitations be a source of ingenuity; not paralysis. These days everyone complains about LIMITED SOMETHING…resources, time, talent. In these situations innovators don’t waste time and energy trying to change conditions they have no control over and they certainly don’t become paralyzed. Instead, they apply their imagination and ingenuity to find unique solutions within the constraints. Challenge people to let limitations be a SPRINGBOARD to creativity and call forth CLEVERNESS.

4. Consider Diversity a strength NOT a frustration. You want to load your pipeline with a steady stream of new ideas, you have to build a team of people who aren’t like you and aren’t like each other. Want to make creativity and innovation a part of your cultural DNA? Then mix it up—surround yourself with some “crazies.” Invite some quirky nonconformists, frustrated activists, weirdos, and colorful eccentrics on the team. Are they bizarre, peculiar and a little bit psychotic? Yes. Are they uncomfortable and unnerving? Yes. Will they make the process of innovation messy? Yes. But if perpetual innovation is a goal you need them.

5. Accept nothing short of elegance. Innovation offers no guarantees, it rejects PROVEN solutions, it tests the validity of an idea thru TRIAL and ERROR. That upsets everyone. ELEGANCE is about reducing choices, eliminating confusion and unnecessary clutter through simplicity and adding a touch of class. ELEGANCE is about pushing through the FIRST, EASIEST, MOST OBVIOUS answer. If you are not the most elegant solution you will, eventually be the target of one.

Global Innovation Insights!

We’ve just returned from speaking at The 3rd Global Innovation Forum hosted in London. After spending a couple days with executives from all over the world on what it takes to innovate, the common answer is COLLABORATION. Companies ranging from Social Media icon, Twitter, to more traditional firms like 3M, IBM, HP, and pharmaceutical giant, Novartis, all are claiming their success depends on cross functional teams willing to blend diverse talents and skills and debate their ideas to discover tomorrow’s next best innovation.
