Secret Sauce

Innovation is just one of our speaking and writing passions. Our journey began over 20 years ago with the research and publication of NUTS! (the inside story of Southwest Airline’s leadership, culture and service philosophy). Back then, innovation was NOT nearly the obsession it is today. Yet, Southwest was and continues to be a trailblazer in innovative business strategies.

Innovation comes from the ideas of highly engaged people, Gary Kelly, Chairman, President & CEO of Southwest Airline calls it their secret sauce… And if you happen to be flying on Halloween their secret sauce is scheduled to be very spicy and loaded with fun!

Power Pinners

Do you know any power pinners? Innovators do! There are POWER Pinners on Pinterest who have upwards of 3 million followers. Fast Company Oct 2012 featured an article on Pinterest and its founder Ben Silbermann.

Pinterest is a “SheEconomy” phenomenon, 80% of users are women. As a reminder, women control upwards of 80% of the US purchasing power.

To date Ben Silbermann (founder) has not commercialized his site. Yet some more aggressive AND innovative marketers are going to the power pinners and paying them to pin. Yep, anywhere between $150 and $1,200 per pin.

So where are your advertising and marketing dollars going these days? Innovators are pinning.

To Notice is Normal, to Innovate is Priceless

While doing the closing keynote for HFMA (Heath Financial Management Association) we met Anthony Stanowski, Vice President Healthcare Industry Relations, ARAMARK. Our innovation message, “Notice, Lead and Disrupt,” inspired Anthony to share a powerful example of how a service worker saved a patient’s life because she NOTICED, LED and DISRUPTED a potential tragedy. Read Anthony’s post of the incident.

Take Aways…
• One person can make a difference;
• No matter what you do for a living, your work is meaningful and adds value;
• Training pays, in this case the ROI is priceless;
• Training people to NOTICE (waste, redundancy, opportunity, and yes, even patient/customer abnormality) is huge and telling their story will inspire more!

Innovations happen when everyone LIVES the values driving the business, WORKS with training top of mind, and SPEAKS UP about things that matter.

What can you do to inspire people to NOTICE and speak up?

Are Corporations People?

We think so. To think otherwise, is to believe that corporations are simply bricks and mortar, buildings. Well buildings don’t innovate, design, produce, succeed or fail. People innovate, people design, people produce, people succeed and sadly, people fail. In the Wall Street Journal, check out what Jack and Suzy Welch say about corporations, capitalism, culture and people.

How can you inspire others to move beyond the idea of corporations as bricks and mortar? It’s time to tap into the hearts and minds of people… people who share a desire to innovate for a better today, a better tomorrow, a better world!

Wide Awake

Herb Kelleher a dear friend and the Founder & Chairman Emeritis, Southwest Airlines, is fond of saying, “At the height of our success we are most vulnerable to complacency!” Do not let complacency become commonplace or white noise in your life. Innovators are “Wide Awake” in their approach to work and life. Listen to Katy Perry as she reminds us of this simple truth!

Cheers to being Wide Awake to possible innovations in your world!
