Jay Leno on Innovation

Jay Leno is a car collector and an impressive aficionado of everything on wheels. The most recent addition to his car collection is the most affordable car in the world, the Tata Motors, Nano and the star of our book Nanovation (BTW, the Nano is only available in India, Jay obviously had a connection).

Here is what Leno said about the Nano:
It’s a great city car. It’s no different than all those electric cars you see driving around and it’s $2700, it’s amazing! I like this car for what it represents to India. India is turning up with more engineers and scientists than anyone else. In the old days, technology was too expensive and labor was cheap. Now it has flipped. Now technology is cheap and labor is expensive. To me, it’s not necessarily about the car. It’s what the car represents!

We agree! The Nano is India’s automotive innovation, the rest of the world said Tata couldn’t possibly make a REAL car for about the cost of a scooter; yet they did! The lessons from the Nano offer innovation insights all industries can borrow from. Yes, labor is expensive and Nanovation shows you how to hire, engage and equip your labor pool to think big and act bold to create innovations in all corners of every organization.

Corporate Obsession!

September 18, 2012

We recently did the opening keynote entitled, “NOTICE, LEAD and DISRUPT” for The Ken Blanchard Client Summit on September 11, 2012. The buzz at the Summit was around innovation as the new corporate obsession.

They opened the conference noting that according to the SEC there were over 33,000 mentions of innovation in corporate messages to shareholders. What’s the take away? Much like quality in the 80′s, culture in the 90′s, and engagement over the last 10 years, innovation is the new corporate MUST do!

Warning! Let’s not forget to borrow from lessons learned in all other corporate obsessions. Innovation can not be a C-suite “commitment” alone. If you study many of the most innovative companies in the world (Apple, Tata, GE, Virgin, Southwest, IDEO) they are led by executives who are committed AND involved in driving innovation (Committed? Yes, but involved too, by rolling up their sleeves and participating).

And like quality and culture, Innovation should NOT be relegated to an innovation center alone, it must be top down and bottom up. For innovation to become more than corporate speak or corporate cool aide and truly become a part of your corporate DNA, everyone, everyday, everywhere must DARE TO TRY.

What if you challenged and inspired all people at all levels to dare to try? What if you rewarded intelligent failure? What if you celebrated and shared risky ideas?

If you and a team of 6-8 internal change agents are interested in taking the first step to leading and creating a culture of innovation join us for one of our INNOVATION Retreats in Sundance, Utah. Call Patti 619.624.9691 or E: info@freibergs.com for pricing and scheduling.

Dedicate the Day!

September 11, 2012

In memory of all those who have gone before us, dedicate this day (September 11th) to reaching across a functional boundary with the goal to serve, help, be there, walk in their shoes, simply show up with a word of appreciation!

Why? Because breaking down cross functional boundaries is a good thing and on 9/11 what if everyone did a few good things….

Ideas!

September 4, 2012

People are NOT your most valuable asset! Ideas are your most valuable asset.

How can we write such a thing?
Unfortunately, too many companies are suffering from a lack of employee engagement. Without engagement companies are like intellectual deserts. If your employees are engaged and if everyone, everywhere, every day are willing to share ideas then, YES, people are are your most valuable asset. Celebrate them, reward them, and do whatever-it takes to protect and promote ongoing engagement.

If not, then you have to figure out your engagement problem! People who are not engaged will not bring innovative ideas to work. According to Ken Blanchard, these people have “quit but stayed!” We call it “Dead People Working!

Today businesses in all industries must innovate or they will perish and innovation happens when engaged people think big and act bold.
