    Limitations = Invitations to Innovation

    July 24, 2012

    Making MORE (not less) out of Limitations

    Innovators are hungry for change and disrupting the status quo. But the fact is, there are some rules, regulations and resource constraints that either can’t be changed or aren’t worth changing given the return on investment. In these situations innovators don’t waste time and energy trying to change conditions and they certainly don’t become paralyzed; they apply their imagination and ingenuity to find unique solutions within the constraints.

    Seth Godin drew our attention to a great example in craftsman Nick Schade. Nick makes some of the most exquisite and extraordinary handmade kayaks in the world—fashioned from bent plywood. The problem is that his Night Heron kayak is 18 feet long and plywood comes in 8 foot sheets leaving joints that most builders would want to hide.

    Nick decided that if the joints were going to be there, he’d make them a feature instead of a flaw. So, he created puzzle-shaped joints and then drew attention to the patterns by staining them different colors. Clever, resourceful, ingenious!

    Limitations don’t have to be limiting. If you let it, a limitation can take you beyond the first, easiest and most obvious answer to a more elegant solution, a solution that radically differentiates you from your competitors.

    NANOBITE #28 – Bad Blake’s tip on Innovation

    July 10, 2012

    Summer is a great time to shape up and recharge your professional brand (your reputation).
    A brand is a reputation, it’s a “promise of a pending experience.” So when colleagues anticipate doing business with you or working with you on a project, what promise of what pending experience comes to mind? Is it a brand you are proud of, or is it worthy of an upgrade, a tune-up?

    Think of the movie, Crazy Heart, Jeff Bridges plays Bad Blake, the has been musician who is clouded and stalled by the haze of alcoholism and haunted by the forgotten fame of his past. When a hip, young reporter shows up at his roadside hotel to interview him for a feature story, Bad Blake starts the interview with a humble apology, “ I feel obligated to apologize for being LESS than you imagined me to be.”

    If you have become less than what others imagine you to be, then its time for a tune-up. It’s time to recharge and engage in some learning, take on a stretch assignment and recharge your leadership brand.

    You can’t rest on the fame, success, awards of your past…. Innovation requires us to learn, stretch and grow, what new ideas are you learning. Where have you stretched, what are you doing to innovate and refresh your brand?

    NANOBITE #27 – Innovation MythBusters (part ll)

    Let’s re-cap: If you want to drive innovation in your business then do NOT buy into these commonly held myths:

    • 1. People are your most valuable assets.
    • 2. Creativity is for right brain thinkers.
    • 3. Multitasking is my gift.
    • 4. Nervous energy is healthy.
    • 5. My most productive time is after hours.

    Let’s bust each myth one at a time. (see NANOBITE #26 for first three)

    4. Nervous energy is never healthy. Nervousness inhibits clarity and is a form of stress. Stress causes us to produce hormones that increase aging and belly fat! Don’t let yourself get nervous, it is not healthy, it isn’t good for your heart, your head or your diet.

    5. If productive is getting simple tasks done after hours when things are quiet, maybe. But if after hours means at the end of a long day then, wrong. Chances are you will be tired and when we are tired we make mistakes. For productivity and creativity to flourish, think sprint, not marathon. When solving a challenge give yourself 15-minutes on and 15-minutes off until you gain some breakthrough ideas.

    Innovation truths:

    • 1. “Engaged people with new ideas” are your most valuable assets;
    • 2. Everyone can be creative, find ways to get different thinkers to collaborate;
    • 3. Creativitiy requires focus, do not multitask;
    • 4. Nervous energy distracts from creativity and dilutes your focus; Find a way to shake it off.
    • 5. To be most creative and productive tackle a challenge when you are fresh (not tired) in 15-minute on/off sessions.
