NANOBITE #26 – Innovation MythBusters (part I)

If you want to drive innovation in your business then do NOT buy into these commonly held myths:

  • 1. People are your most valuable assets.
  • 2. Creativity is for right brain thinkers.
  • 3. Multitasking is my gift.
  • 4. Nervous energy is healthy.
  • 5. My most productive time is after hours.

Let’s bust each myth one at a time.
1. Ideas are your most valuable asset. Innovation requires fully engaged people who bring creative ideas to work. As long as people are engaged and empowered to bring ideas to work, then YES people with ideas are your most valuable asset. Although, if engagement is suffering and people are checked-out (just going through the motions) and not bringing innovative ideas to work, are they really your most valuable asset?

2. All people whether they are left or right brain thinkers are capable of creativity and problem solving. Competiveness requires multiple perspectives, ideas and insights. Innovation though collaboration is enriched by different approaches to processing and solving today’s business challenges.

3. Most women think they are gifted at multitasking, BUT neither men nor women function effectively when they multitask. Research indicates that multitasking lowers your IQ by 10 points (that’s like missing a full nights sleep). Multitasking actually distracts you from your ability to be creative.

Myths 4 and 5 will be busted next week…

On a Monsoon night after seeing a family of five on a motor scooter slip and scatter along the pavement due to slick roads; RatanTata, the most powerful business man in India and one of the most influential leaders in the world looked beyond the “white noise”—sadly 10,000,000 are injured annually on the roads of India, it isn’t okay, but it is all too common. On this night Ratan Tata, NOTICED, LEAD and created a DISRUPTION.

NANOBITE #24 – Listen for the White Noise

What if you challenged the status-quo? What if you rose out of the sea of sameness in favor of a better way? What has become “white noise” in your daily routine? What are you so used to that now you are blind to, or unaware of?

We live on a canyon and there is a freeway below our home. If you were a guest and left your window open at night, the freeway noise might bother you and make it difficult to sleep. We’ve been in the home for 17 years and that noise is no longer audible to us, it has become “white noise” in our lives, it’s there, but we are used to it and therefore we don’t notice or hear it, anymore.

You are most vulnerable to complacency and indifference when you are blind or deaf to what has become white noise around you (think SOP’s, status-quo, regulations, compliance).

When you stop looking and listening for something new, fresh, and radically different you stop adding value and you become vulnerable to white noise.

If routine has gotten the best of you, have the humility to ask, “Where have we become arrogant?” “Where have we become too comfortable?” And have the courage to ask, “What can we shake up, what can we change?

Innovation requires everyone to notice the white noise, question it’s value and create a disruption in favor of something better.

NANOBITE #23 – Is Innovation Everyone’s Job?

McKinsey conducted a global executive survey on Innovation.

Findings: Executives recognize the need to innovate yet many industries are slow adopters! Where do innovations come from? The #1 source is employees (not executives).

Take away: Innovation is everyone’s job, all employees, everywhere, every day!

If you want creativity to swell inside your organization you must create an OPEN MARKET where employees are free to share their ideas. How close are you? Answer these questions:

  • Do you really believe that anyone, anywhere in your organization can be a catalyst for innovation or is innovation really driven from the top?
  • If you examined the last ten innovative ideas and tracked them back to their sources, where did they come from?
  • In your organization do ideas get supported and funded based on their value or on the status and power of their sources?
  • Are people with creative ideas free to voice their opinions and garner support or do great ideas tend to get squelched or fall into a black hole?
  • If competitive advantage depends on the best ideas; not position, power, and politics, are your leaders willing to create an open marketplace for innovative ideas to flow?

What assumptions and systems need to change for your organization to influence everyone, everywhere, every day to bring ideas to an open and INTERESTED market?
