NANOBITE #22 – Become an Innovator

Ten Tried and Tested Tips on Becoming an Innovator…

  • Stretch, grow and learn something new every day!
  • Read biographies and get inspired by succcessful people and cool companies.
  • Challenge your team to look for ways to save a $1/day and boldly share your strategies.
  • Cleanse, organize and prioritize—no more procrastinating (innovation is stalled by clutter).
  • Focus on what you can control… Don’t let what you can not control take up too much of your today!
  • Allocate an hour a day on making progress on your “want to” projects (if you can’t make progress – delegate).
  • Come up with ways to add value each day (protect yourself from this question; “Why shouldn’t we outsource you?”).
  • Avoid negative, stagnant, stuck people and surround yourself with people who are moving, networking, and making a difference. (Both are contagious!)
  • Get grounded—Recharge your faith, therein lies HOPE, direction, and a more focused perspective.

NANOBITE #21 – Innovation Starts with YOU!

Innovation starts with YOU!

  • How many times have you looked at a situation in your company, community or country and thought, Someone should do something about this?
    What if you were that someone?
  • What if you shared your vision with an interested and diverse team and then collaborated to make it happen?
  • And forget changing the world for a moment: How about in your job? Is there some problem in your workplace or in your industry that you think “someone” ought to address?
  • Learn from Mary, she took 100% responsibility, noticed a problem, disrupted the status quo, and led a powerful innovation on the manufacturing floor!
  • What would it take for you to take on a challenge and lead an innovation?
  • Innovation is EVERYONE’S job. It should not be relageted to the so-called “Innovation Center.” And if you have one, be sure those who work in such a center are NOT operating as an island that is off limits to the rest of the organization.
  • Just to be clear, innovation is everyone’s job. Innovation comes from people who are in touch, relevant, engaged, and passionate about sharing their innovation projects.

    NANOBITE #20 – Yin and Yang of Leadership

    May 15, 2012

    Confident Humility – The Yin and Yang of Leadership!

    · Confidence makes you believable;

    Humility makes you approachable and teachable.

    · Confidence imparts wisdom and knowledge;

    Humility inspires curiosity, growth and innovation.

    · Confidence is having an informed point of view;

    Humility is the realization that you haven’t cornered the market on insight.

    · Confidence is the courage to question others and the status quo;

    Humility is the courage to have your own ideas challenged and improved.

    · Confidence compels you to tell your story and be interesting;

    Humility compels you to listen and be interested.

    · Confidence says, I can do this;

    Humility says, “My way of doing it is not the only way.”

    · Confidence is the ability to step out and try something risky;

    Humility is the ability to be vulnerable and admit your mistakes.

    · Confidence is realizing a bold and audacious dream;

    Humility is realizing that a bold and audacious dream requires collaboration!

    Oh that our political system, organizations and homes will be filled with more leaders who lead with confident humility!

    More on Yin and Yang!

    In the West “Yin and Yang” is used to describe how polar opposites or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent and only exist in relation to one another. In other words, one gives strength and power to the other.

    Yin and Yang are not opposing forces; they are complementary opposites. Everything has both Yin and Yang aspects, as light cannot exist without darkness and vice-versa. Yin and Yang symbolizes the idea of healthy tension and in this dynamic is true strength!

    Lead with Confident Humility!

    NANOBITE #19 – Break the habit…

    May 8, 2012

    Break the habit of frivolous distractions!

    Innovators are very conscious of how they spend their time.

    1. Innovators avoid frivolous distractions
    2. Innovators commit to work that adds value.

    Make a list of the top three frivolous distraction in your day. Consciously stop! Do whatever-it-takes to avoid being distracted by work that adds NO value.

    Replace your top three distractions with projects or activities that you never seem to have time for because they require time, energy, & creative thinking.

    To break the frivolous distraction habit, set some new time-bound work goals and commit to doing work and/or projects that DO “add value” for at least a month.

    NANOBITE #18

    May 1, 2012

    Part II…

    Innovations are fueled by thinking big and answering performance altering “what if” questions!

    What if you prioritized thinking over tasks and quiet over chaos?

    What if you refused to accept mediocrity?

    What if you reached across a functional boundary to learn something new?

    What if you tried something new every week?

    What if you didn’t take yourself so seriously?

    What if you laughed twice as much?

    What if you listened more than you talked?

    What if you scheduled time for creativity and fun (at work)?

    What if you seized this moment and committed to one change right now?
